Kirk's Castile

Kirk’s has been sold as a coconut castile bar since 1839, which makes it one of the oldest continuously made consumer products in the catalogue. James S. Kirk started it in Utica, moved it to Chicago, and Procter & Gamble bought the company in 1930; Rich Oliver bought the brand back out of P&G in the early 2000s, and his daughters run it now from Erlanger, Kentucky, across the river from Cincinnati.

The company says all of its products are made in the United States and never says where. That is the usual shape of a personal-care claim and on its own it would leave this at the fourth mark. What moves it is the Kentucky Cabinet for Economic Development’s manufacturers directory, which lists the Erlanger address under soap manufacturing with sixteen people on it — a state record, independent of the brand, that puts production and not just a mailing address at the place the brand is run from.

Second mark, not first, for the reason the whole category sits there: the bar is essentially one ingredient, and the company states that ingredient is grown in the Philippines and Malaysia. It is worth saying that Kirk’s answers the question at all. Most soap brands print an American flag and leave the oil unmentioned.

The limit is coverage. Sixteen employees and eighty-odd SKUs across three brands is a tight fit, and nothing published says whether the liquid lines are filled in Erlanger too. The directory entry is also a 2020 snapshot. Both are re-check items rather than doubts about the bar.
